Fortum, Uniper aim to lower Scope 3 emissions by 35%

Fortum Oyj and Uniper SE aim to reduce their indirect Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2030 at the latest, compared to a 2021 base year, the companies announced Dec. 20.

Scope 3 emissions are caused by other parties, including activities and related greenhouse gas emissions along the energy value chain. These include indirect emissions caused by business travel and commuting or purchased goods and services.

"We will work together with our producers and customers to reduce both upstream and downstream emissions across our value chains," said Uniper Chief Sustainability Officer David Bryson.

The new target supports the companies' commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 at the latest. Fortum previously set a goal of reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions in its European power generation by at least 50% by 2030 and to be carbon neutral by 2035.
