Iberdrola SA subsidiary Scottish Power Ltd. entered into a three-year contract to supply renewable electricity to Hitachi Rail Ltd.'s U.K. operations.
The deal will see Scottish Power provide an estimated 21 GWh of electricity per year to Hitachi Rail's U.K. maintenance and manufacturing sites, according to a Nov. 4 news release. The agreement will support Hitachi Rail's commitment to being carbon neutral across all its sites by 2030.
"Companies changing how they source energy, whether through power purchase agreements or through top-tier renewable energy guarantees of origin certificates like this one, will make a significant difference to the U.K. achieving its climate change targets," Andrew Ward, CEO of Scottish Power's retail business, said in a statement.
Hitachi Rail is a subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd. and is one of the U.K.'s major train manufacturers. The company also maintains over 200 trains at depots across England, Wales and Scotland.
