Total SE has decided to suspend work at its LNG project in the northern Cabo Delgado province in Mozambique following violence from jihadists, the Associated Press reported Jan. 4.
Mozambique rebels attacked a village just outside the fence of the gas project on Jan. 1. Following the incident, Total evacuated about 3,000 of its workforce from the Afungi peninsula, according to the report.
The oil major has stopped work at the site and evacuated staff and contractors by air, the report said, citing the Zitamar news agency of Mozambique.
Total in July 2020 secured $15.8 billion in funding for the LNG project, which it acquired from Occidental Petroleum Corp. following its merger with Anadarko Petroleum Corp.
