Steel manufacturer Tenaris SA is partnering with Italian utility companies Snam SpA and Edison SpA for a test project to produce steel at Tenaris' Dalmine mill in Italy with green hydrogen.
The companies said Jan. 11 that they intend to generate hydrogen and oxygen through a planned 20-MW electrolyzer at the Dalmine plant and replace natural gas with green hydrogen for steelmaking.
After the initial test, the companies will evaluate whether to expand their collaboration to other stages of the production process, they said in the news release.
The test project is part of Tenaris' broader Dalmine Zero Emissions initiative to integrate green hydrogen in steelmaking from the electric arc furnace steel and in the downstream processing of the Dalmine mill.
