The Shanghai Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau has launched an investigation into Pinduoduo Inc.'s working conditions after one of its employees collapsed and died while walking home, Bloomberg News reported Jan. 4.
The incident reportedly created a social media backlash against the Chinese company and the long hours expected of its workers. A hashtag about the employee's death on the Sina Weibo service drew more than 260 million views, Bloomberg reported.
Pinduoduo also reportedly apologized for a post on the Zhihu online platform that said all people from the bottom rungs of society exchange their lives for money. The company said a contractor had uploaded the post without authorization.
