Investment firm nominates 4 members to Exxon board

New investment firm Engine No. 1 nominated Gregory Goff, Kaisa Hietala, Alexander Karsner and Anders Runevad to Exxon Mobil Corp.'s board of directors, according to a Jan. 27 news release.

Engine No. 1 said it believes that the oil major needs new members "who are sufficiently independent from the current board to ensure a clean break from a strategy and mindset that have led to years of value destruction and poorly positioned the company for the future."

Goff was the CEO of Marathon Petroleum Corp. unit Andeavor, while Hietala was executive vice president for Neste Oyj's renewable products segment. Karsner was the U.S. assistant secretary of energy, and Runevad was the CEO of Vestas Wind Systems A/S, a wind turbine manufacturing, installation and servicing company.

The investment firm said it plans to continue making the case to shareholders to "reenergize" Exxon.

In a same-day news release, Exxon said it will evaluate Engine No. 1's nomination and nominees in line with its bylaws. The oil major also said it will provide updates to shareholders in the coming weeks regarding its strategy to build long-term value, along with updates on company performance and its climate change plan.
