European box office revenue drops 72.5% YOY through November 2020

European box office revenue dropped 72.5% year over year to $1.82 billion in the first 11 months of 2020, according to data from OpusData compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence.

The Netherlands had the slimmest year-over-year revenue decline of 50.6% to $161.2 million, while Spain continued to have the largest year-over-year decline of 77.1% to $146.7 million.

Meanwhile, the U.K., which experienced the second-highest year-over-year revenue drop in the region at 76.9%, posted the highest film revenue in 2020 regionally through November at $355.1 million.

The number of films released in Europe dropped to 125 in November 2020 from 310 in October 2020, when the industry had shown signs of recovery. Film releases in November 2020 dropped 65% year over year.

Russia had the highest number of new film releases in Europe with 48 films, followed by Spain with 30 films, data from OpusData compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence showed.

Action film "Tenet," which was in European cinemas in August 2020, and "1917," released in January 2020, made the top three highest-grossing releases for 2020 through November in Spain and the U.K.

Across the region, action and adventure continued to be the most popular genre in 2020, followed by drama and comedy.
