US banks’ net interest margins are poised to expand as funding costs move lower, while earning assets mature and are replaced with higher-yielding loans and securities. Heightened tariff-related anxiety will weigh on loan growth and credit quality and could threaten earnings growth in 2025, but the worst case fears in the investment community appear to have subsided and banks still expect to benefit from deregulation.
The fintech sector should benefit from a friendlier regulatory environment as well. Federal Banking regulators have said they will be more open-minded toward innovation and technology adoption by creating a more transparent approach to fintech partnerships and digital assets and tokenization, while addressing growing technology costs for community banks. The regulatory posture has renewed optimism for banks' efforts to collaborate with fintechs and participate in real-time payments.

Maureen started her career with SNL Financial in 2008 and has been producing training seminars and executive level conferences for professionals at US Commercial banks for the last 14 years. Maureen gradated from the University of Virginia with dual degrees in Economics and Psychology.

Jordan McKee is a Principal Research Analyst for Customer Experience & Commerce, leading the coverage of the payments ecosystem at 451 Research, a part of S&P Global Market Intelligence. He focuses on the digital transformation of the commerce value chain, with an emphasis on the major trends and technologies impacting payment networks, issuing and acquiring banks, payment processors and other payments industry stakeholders. His research helps vendors and enterprises assess and address the implications of the ongoing digitization of the shopping journey.
Jordan joined 451 Research with the company's acquisition of Yankee Group in 2013. Nathan Stovall, with 17 years' experience covering the banking sector, is a principal analyst for the FIG Research offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence. His primary responsibilities include covering and analyzing financial institutions, with a focus on the banking industry.
