White House officials will hold meetings with a trade group of automakers and California's clean air regulator June 19 before making public a proposal to reverse Obama-era rules aimed at increasing fuel efficiency, Reuters reported June 14, citing participants.

The White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, part of the Office of Management and Budget, will meet separately with Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, which represents General Motors Co., Volkswagen AG, Toyota Motor Corp. and other major companies, and California Air Resources Board.

The rules formed under Obama's administration, negotiated with automakers in 2011, sought to double average fleet-wide vehicle fuel efficiency to about 50 miles, or 80 kilometers, per gallon by 2025.

Officials told Reuters that the Trump administration's proposal would include, among other options, freezing fuel efficiency requirements at 2020 levels.

The proposed rule is expected to be made available for public comment later in June or July, the report added.
