The S&P 500 lost ground for a second consecutive month in July.
The index slipped 0.1% last month, compared to a steeper 1.1% drop in June. Small-cap stocks were hit harder than their larger counterparts, with the Russell 2000 falling 3.1% but the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising 0.3%.
