The U.K. has more than 16.1 GW, totaling 729 projects, of battery storage capacity in operation, under construction or in various stages of planning, according to a report from RenewableUK.
The report also shows that 1.1 GW of storage capacity is operational, 600 MW of projects are under construction, 8.3 GW of capacity is consented, and 1.6 GW of projects are being planned. About 4.5 GW is in the early stage of development.
An additional 6 GW of energy storage from liquefied and compressed air, pumped hydro, flywheels and gravity-based technology is operating, under construction or being planned, according to RenewableUK. This brings the total U.K. energy storage portfolio capacity to more than 22 GW.
RenewableUK's prior report, published in December 2019, identified a total pipeline of 10.5 GW across 600 projects, with 700 MW in operation.
