Exelon Corp. subsidiary Constellation NewEnergy Inc. entered into a long-term power purchase agreement with the GIANT Co., formerly known as Giant Food Stores LLC, to power the grocery retailer's Pennsylvania operations with renewable energy.
Constellation, backed by GIANT's commitment, entered into separate long-term power purchase agreements to procure 80 MW of solar power. North Carolina-headquartered independent power producer Pine Gate Renewables LLC will develop the solar projects, which are expected to start commercial operations between June 2022 and January 2024. However, the renewable energy certificates from the solar projects are not included in the agreement with GIANT and will be transacted separately, Constellation said in a Nov. 4 news release.
GIANT will receive approximately 155 million kWh of energy per year from the power purchase agreement, with the energy being matched by Green-e Energy Certified RECs sourced from renewable energy facilities located throughout the U.S., the release said. The agreement will help GIANT avoid more than 100,000 tons of carbon emissions associated with its energy use annually, the release adds.
Amerex Energy Services, representing GIANT, worked with Constellation to design and implement the renewable product structure.
GIANT is a unit of Dutch food retailer Koninklijke Ahold Delhaize NV and changed its name in February 2020.
