    FAQs

How many battery electric light vehicles are expected to be produced in North America in 2022?

We expect there to be nearly 900,000 EVs produced in North America in 2022, nearly 60% more than what we saw in 2021. We expect this to strong growth to continue to more than 2.7 million units in 2025, almost 500% our 2022 forecast.

Will the United States hit President Biden’s goal for 50% of sales to be battery electric or plug-in hybrids by 2030?

It’s going to be close. Our current US sales outlook has battery electric and plug-in hybrid sales climbing about 47% in 2030, just short of President Biden’s target. However, between the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act and other recent manufacturer announcements, the target could very well be achieved.

In the light vehicle segment, when will battery electric and fuel cell vehicles exceed ICE/Hybrid vehicles?

In 2031, S&P Global Mobility expects that the number of BEVs and FCVs produced globally will surpass total ICE/Hybrid vehicles.

Which US state has the highest adoption rate among electrified vehicles?
California.  In 2022, 15 US states accounted for 83.6% of xEVs.  California alone accounted for 42.6%
What is the outlook for ICE-based vehicles in North America?
North America production of light vehicles powered only by an ICE is expected to decline from nearly 12 million in 2022 to 5.4 million in 2030. While this is a steep decline, when hybrid applications are also included (which will still utilize ICEs) the figure rises to nearly 10 million.
Why is S&P Global Mobility’s outlook for hydrogen powered vehicles so low?
While Hydrogen-powered vehicles offer a number of consumer advantages, most manufacturers are currently focusing investment and development efforts on battery electric vehicles. Challenges with infrastructure and production costs make battery electrics a more attractive option today. We expect to see significant developments in hydrogen-powered vehicles in the 2030s, particularly with commercial vehicles, but little growth in our short-term outlook.
How do you define light vehicles?
Light vehicles are defined as vehicles below 6 tons.
