Total U.S. coal production for the week ended Jan. 5 remained flat year over year at 11.9 million tons, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

For the 52 weeks ended Jan. 5, production was 752 million tons, a year-over-year decrease of 2.5%, while year-to-date coal output fell 1.4% year over year to 8.7 million tons.

The western region's coal production for the week reached 6.5 million tons, posting a 1% loss from the prior year's 6.6 million tons. Data for the western region covers Powder River Basin mines.

Coal production from Appalachian mines totaled 3.3 million tons, up 4.3% from the year-ago week's 3.1 million tons.

The interior region's production held steady at 2.2 million tons. Interior region data covers mines in the Illinois Basin.
