South Africa's AMCU union demands wage increases from Glencore

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, one ofSouth Africa's biggest trade unions, has delivered a list of demands to one of 's South African units, including a call for a minimum miner's salary of 6,000 rand per month and a 10%pay increase for those already earning above that level, Mining Weekly reportedMay 6.

Other demands on the list handed to Murray Houston, chief operatingofficer of Glencore Coal, included an increase in the company's contributions toworkers' medical aid schemes, as well as boosts to transport and living out allowances.

AMCU national treasurer Jimmy Gama handed Houston the list duringa protest staged outside Glencore's offices in Johannesburg May 6, requesting thatthe U.K.-listed miner and metals trader respond by May 13.

The union organized the protest in response to a strike lastmonth at the Wonderfontein coal mine that turned violent.

During the latest rally, Gama criticized South Africa's miningsector for its lack of transformation and its continued payment of "slave wages"to workers.
