Cigna to end ban on coverage for autism spectrum disorder claims

The Office of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has reached a settlement with Cigna Corp. requiring the health insurer to eliminate a written ban on coverage for claims of neuropsychological testing of psychiatric conditions and autism spectrum disorder.

Cigna also agreed to pay a penalty of $50,000 and to reprocess denied claims for autism spectrum disorder, Schneiderman said. The insurer will also provide coverage information to its members and their healthcare providers upon request.
