Syndicated loans return 10% in 2016
IHS Markit's 2016 Q4 and full year syndicated loan market snapshot shows strong performance for leveraged loans and CLOs in Europe and the US.
Highlights:
Loans had a strong year, nearly doubling historical average returns of 5%
- 10.14%: Markit iBoxx USD Leveraged Loan Index total return 2016
- 9.20%: Markit iBoxx USD Liquid Leveraged Loan Index total return 2016
- Both indexes posted strong gains in Q4 2016
- Prices increased in US, Europe and Asia in Q4 and for the year 2016
- Spreads tightened in almost every sector in Q4, led by energy
- The CLO market firmed througout the year in both Europe and US
