BMW's new 7-Series appears a major step forward over the current car, but it will not challenge the segment-leading Mercedes-Benz S-Class in global sales terms.
IHS Automotive perspective | |
Significance | BMW has launched the sixth generation of its flagship 7-Series which will demonstrate the firm's cutting edge in-car connectivity and advanced driver assistance system technology. |
Implications | As well as demonstrating BMW's efforts in future vehicle technology, the 7-Series will take the fight to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class through focusing on BMW's traditional strength in driving dynamics in combinations with high levels of passenger comfort. |
Outlook | While the new 7-Series is forecast to close the gap in sales to the S-Class, it will not get near to challenging the S-Class's position as the world's dominant F1 segment luxury limousine. The model also gives styling pointers for future BMWs, especially the next-generation 5-Series. |

BMW last night launched the sixth generation of its flagship 7-Series model at BMW Welt in Munich, according to a company statement. The new model will focus on traditional BMW strengths such as superior driving dynamics, while combining these with improved passenger car comfort and equipment levels relating to car-
connectivity and advanced drivers assistance systems (ADAS). The styling of the new car was overseen by BMW's head of design Adrian van Hooydonk and boasts strong lines and attractive proportions with a bigger "kidney grille" and the company's new front light graphics. Commenting on the design Van Hooydonk said, "The primary objective in the development of the new car was to create a vision of modern luxury and to exceed our customers' expectations. In BMW's eyes, modern luxury is rooted in the most advanced technologies and extremely fine attention to detail."
Driving and comfort
BMW wants the 7-Series to be the class leader in terms of its driving dynamics in line with the company's traditional brand values. To help achieve this the new model is up to 130 kg lighter than the previous generation model through the use of a "Carbon Core" which uses the firm's expertise in carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). The model uses a mixed materials approach in its body structure, combining CFRP with steel and aluminium. The new model will also gain a range of upgraded and modernised conventional V-8 and straight-six gasoline (petrol) and diesel engines, which will all be offered with an updated eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system is also available with all powertrain options.

The new 7-Series' standard specification includes two-axle air suspension with automatic self-levelling and Dynamic Damper Control. Options to improve the driving experience and levels of passenger comfort include Integral Active Steering system and the Executive Drive Pro system with active roll stabilisation and data-based predictive function which works in conjunction with road conditions and driving style to configure the car's suspension systems. Electromechanical anti-roll bars reduce body roll under dynamic cornering and the active chassis control system adapts the dampers to road conditions.
ADAS
The new 7-Series features a number of new advanced driver assistance systems enhanced working in conjunction with BMW's ConnectedDrive system. Steering and lane control assistant, lane keeping assistant with active side collision protection, rear collision prevention and crossing traffic warning functions have been added to the existing Driving Assistant Plus system. The model also comes with traffic jam assistant, which involves elements of semi-automated driving. The Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function needs the driver to press a button to incorporate speed restrictions detected by the Speed Limit Info function. The model also debuts a new generation of BMW's Surround View system now also includes a 3D View and Panorama Side View option.
In-car technology and connectivity

BMW 7-Series interior |
In an all-new innovation for BMW the company is showing the first signs that it may move away from its traditional iDrive system which has been its method of controlling complex in car systems for more than decade now. The system has a touchscreen element for the first time, in addition to the iDrive controller. Another new addition to the iDrive system's functionality is BMW's' new "gesture control" system where driver hand movements are detected and interpreted by a 3D sensor system to control. The system can be used for controlling audio volume and turning down incoming phone calls among other things. There is also a new integrated into the centre console, which allows wireless, inductive charging for mobile phones for the first time in a car.
Outlook and implications
Production of the new 7-Series has begun at BMW's Plant at Dingolfing where all previous generations of the model have been built. Dingolfing serves as the aluminium competence centre within the BMW Group for CFRP used in body construction as part of a hybrid technique. The new 7-Series appears highly attractively styled. It has the imposing and impressive presence combined with graceful lines and neat proportions. The model's styling is also likely to give a clear indication of what the next 5-Series will look like, which will debut next year.

The new generation car will also have a vast array of new ADAS systems and in-car connectivity options that are expected on a premium segment limousine and which will point the way to BMW's future activities in the field of the connected car, while many of the systems on the new 7-Series will form part of the interconnected web of sensors which will eventually make up BMW's fully autonomous driving technology. However, while on first view the new 7-Series appears a major advance on the previous generation car – which is seen as being slightly underwhelming in some quarters – IHS Automotive still expects the Mercedes-Benz S-Class to dominate the segment thanks particularly to its strong sales in China and the US, with the new 7-Series rising from 47,000 units in 2015 to 64,000 units in 2016. However, this compares with the 101,000 units and 96,000 unit sales forecast for the S-Class in the equivalent years, with the Mercedes maintaining a strong lead until the end of the decade.
