Ford is starting a 10-year plan to modernise its research and engineering facilities in Dearborn, Michigan, United States, reports Crain's Detroit Business. Reportedly, the project is estimated to cost USD1 billion and may include consolidating many of its 26,000 employees in reconfigured and updated office and testing space. Ford Land Development Company has said there are specific plans to announce, reports Crain's. Ford plans to announce the plan after selecting an architect and the company has requested bids, according to the report. Ford is reportedly looking for bids for two schemes: one scheme would retain the existing dynamometer building and research and innovation centre, and the other would not have that requirement.
Significance: Ford's potential modernisation plan may be launched as General Motors (GM) updates its core engineering and design facility (see United States: 15 May 2015: GM announces USD1-bil. investment in US technical centre). In both cases, the facilities were built in the 1950s and are said to be due for changes. Both automakers have also reported stronger sales and profits recently, and are willing to invest in their businesses.
