Overview

Were you aware that under The Constitution Act of 1867 (formerly known as the British North American Act of 1867), a census to determine population was required for the new parliament? Originally taken after Confederation, the first census for the Dominion of Canada enumerated the four provinces of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Initially taken every 10 years, in 1951 the cadence was changed to a five-year cycle. Completion of the Census is mandatory.
Census Data is collected as part of the federal mandate to have relevant and timely information about our country to shape public policy equitably. Statistics Canada, a department of the federal government is the group responsible for the collection of the information. The most recent Census was gathered in May 2021, representing the first time the information was gathered almost entirely online.
