In November 2021 the Climate Change Conference in Glasgow - COP26 - hosted over 140 countries. These meetings continued the ongoing dialogue for the United Nations framework on climate change and encompassed goals of the Paris Agreement.
S&P Global will summarize the discussion in Glasgow with a focus on the implications for Canadian policy and compliance. Global environmental targets (aspirational or achievable?) are based on a patchwork of countries and companies deploying individual policies based on similar framework, but there isn't a global entity that has the power to set policy everywhere, of course. With the environment front and centre driving government policy for transportation, OEM commitment and investment for a transition to zero emissions electric vehicles will support growth in manufacturing and sales of ZEVs in the second half of this decade. However, consumer adoption remains a wild card with education, affordability, range anxiety and infrastructure as key issues holding adoption back.
Will EVs be on track to tip the balance away from ICE vehicles in the timeframes set by global policy makers? What did our policy makers commit to in Glasgow and how will this roll out in practice in Canada? OEM announcements for electric vehicle platforms, existing OEMs with EV models, and new Logos entering Canada will be highlighted. In addition, we will discuss the implications of US new federal EPA ambitions and their timeframes and California's ZEV goals to 2035 to Canadian policy.
