EVs reach record share in 2020
In 2020, 2% of personal new registrations were electric. With the launch of Model 3 in late 2018, EV share doubled YoY. Despite slowed growth YoY since the Model 3 launch impact, EV has outpaced the industry. Tesla owns nearly 80% of the EV market. Without Tesla, EV share is still less than 0.5%. Tesla held the top 3 spots for EV in 2020 (Model Y was #2 with less than a year since launch). With more than 100 new EV nameplates and variants launching from 2021-2025, S&P Global forecasts EV share to be at least 3.5% in 2021 and at least 10% in 2025 (Fig. 1).
