Six vessels left the US Gulf coast in the last week to carry distillates across the Atlantic, which is double the number from the previous week.

At least two of these vessels are carrying jet fuel following the opening of the arbitrage to carry jet fuel from the US to Northwest Europe last week.

Others are carrying diesel to the Mediterranean which has been missing volumes recently due to low arrivals of vessels small enough to call at many Mediterranean ports.

Cheap freight has helped to open the arbitrage of diesel to Europe, with the rate to bring 38,000 mt of clean products from the US Gulf to Europe assessed at Worldscale 77.50 Friday.

Despite a recent collapse in the HOGO which signals the relative value of US compared to European distillates and cheap freight, volumes moving on the route have been relatively slim.

A collapse in the US renewable fuel credit price has meant that barrels have been more likely to be sold domestically rather than exported, while refinery maintenance in the US Gulf has also reduced availability of export barrels.

In the US liquidity has been relatively low. Although some demand was heard for barrels into Latin America, they were less than anticipated, sources said.
