Colonial Pipeline proposes to allow SAF in jet fuel shipments

Colonial Pipeline, which operates the largest refined products pipeline in the US, has proposed to allow sustainable aviation fuel in its network's shipments, the operator said in a notice to shippers on Jan. 21.

The proposal is comprised of two changes: the first would be a modification of the existing Aviation Kerosene Grade 54 fuel to allow for blends of SAF up to 50% while the second would be the addition of a new product specification, labeling SAF produced from the hydroprocessing esters and fatty acids (HEFA) and Fischer-Tropsch pathways as "Grade 50."

The notice adds that entities would need to confirm jet shipments blended with SAF meet the American Society for Testing and Materials specifications and disclose the blend level before sending product on the line.

Colonial noted that SAF shipped on the line would need to be blended with jet fuel rather than shipped as a single product.

If the proposal to include SAF in jet fuel shipments is approved, the pipeline expects to enact changes towards the end of the first quarter as it will be accepting feedback until Feb. 4.
