Geneva Airport cancels plan with Neste for renewable jet fuel mix

London — Finland-based refiner Neste said Tuesday its plan to work with Geneva Airport to introduce renewable jet fuel for at least 1% of the annual jet fuel consumption from late 2018 onward has been cancelled following a decision taken by Swiss authorities.

A case for funding for the project was made to the Swiss authorities which decided against it after a consultation, Neste said in a statement. The International Civil Aviation Organization has set a target that from 2020 onward the growth in aviation should be carbon-neutral.

"The authorities' decision not to support the Renewable Jet Fuel project in Geneva Airport is a disappointment, but does not affect Neste's plan to bring Neste MY Renewable Jet fuel to the global market," says Kaisa Hietala, Executive Vice President of Neste's Renewable Products business area.

Some 16.5 million passengers passed through Geneva airport in 2016, indicating a large potential for the renewable jet mix.

Currently, the only viable alternative to liquid fossil fuels for powering commercial aircraft is sustainable renewable jet fuel, which is one the most efficient means of cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Neste's renewable jet fuel production is to continue as planned despite this setback, and volumes will increase year-on-year. With Neste's planned additional 1 million mt renewable product capacity in Singapore, renewable jet fuel production is estimated to increase significantly by 2022.

This will double its Singaporean capacity and extend its global renewables capacity to 3.6 million mt.

The use of biofuels in aviation has long been a talking point, but higher costs and a lack of mandates and has deterred potential participants.
