How does Platts assess Recycled Polypropylene prices?

Platts assessments are based on market information, including, but not limited to, firm bids and offers, and trades reported to the editor up to the close of business (4:30 PM London time).

All the information used to inform the assessment is published transparently on S&P Global Platts platforms as "heards". An assessment rationale is published explaining what the assessments are and how they have been reached.

A weekly market commentary accompanies the price assessments and rationale, which highlights the most important trends that have affected the markets that week and provides insight into what the market expects over the coming weeks.

Platts European Recycled Polypropylene Weekly Commentary

  • Downward pressure heard despite tight supply
  • Recyclers continue to push for higher prices

The upward trend seen in the European recycled polypropylene market for a number of months appeared to ease in the week ended Jan. 19 amid some resistance from buyers.

"Virgin is moving downwards [which] should put pressure on recycled to stabilize or even move downwards," a converter said.

Weaker sentiment from the buyers' side, however, was met with higher offer levels from recyclers who continued to try to pass on higher waste feedstock prices down the chain.

This sentiment was also shared by some buyers, with one of them saying that "the situation is much tighter regarding... feedstock. We are having difficulties finding volumes." The downward pressure in the virgin PP market drove some weaker sentiment for recycled grades.

Platts European Recycled Polypropylene Weekly Rationale

S&P Global Platts assessed black recycled polypropylene pellets at Eur1,250/mt DDP Northwest Europe Jan. 19, down Eur20/mt on the day and Eur5/mt on the week, below an ex works Poland offer, normalized to DDP NWE at Eur1,450/mt, deemed above market by a distributor and converter, and towards a range of indications from a buyer and distributor at Eur1,200-1,225/mt.

Natural pellets were assessed at Eur1,825/mt DDP NWE, down Eur5/mt on the day and on the week, maintaining a stable premium on the week to black pellets, taking into consideration a buyer's indication heard at Eur1,600/mt, while pending further corroboration.
