"Prairie Catalytic has achieved on-spec production and we have samples shipping out to the market this week," the source told S&P Global Platts in an email.

The plant was originally announced in June 2016, with production expected to begin in 2017.

Greenyug LLC formed a subsidiary, Prairie Catalytic LLC, that owns the plant. It was built onsite at US ethanol producer Archer Daniels Midland's Columbus, Nebraska, ethanol plant. Another source said the plant's capacity is 50,000 mt/year.

The owners sited it alongside feedstock production to try to minimize logistical costs.

Greenyug develops chemical production processes using renewable feedstocks, according to previous statements from the company. Prairie Catalytic is the first US plant to use ethanol as an ethyl acetate feedstock.

Ethyl acetate is used in products ranging from paints and coatings to pharmaceuticals and consumer goods.

Neither Greenyug nor Prairie Catalytic were available for comment Tuesday.
