Listen: A method to the madness: a likely smooth OPEC extension, possible plot twists and packed sardines

With the producer group meeting on November 30, this month's S&P Global Platts OPEC Outlook podcast takes you behind the scenes for an insider view of how journalists and analysts spend OPEC week –- the mad dashes to talk to ministers, the long hours of waiting in hotel lobbies, clandestine meetings with sources, and, of course, the meeting itself and its accompanying notorious press scrum.

Platts editors Rosemary Griffin and Eklavya Gupte join OPEC Outlook host Herman Wang to talk about how Platts' team coverage of all the market-moving events unfolds throughout the week, while Jamie Webster, a fellow at Columbia University's Center for Global Energy Policy and veteran OPEC watcher, provides his perspective on why analysts come to Vienna for the meeting. Samir Madani, founder of, also joins the show to discuss how he monitors all the OPEC action on Twitter.

In addition to the how-to guide on covering OPEC, this month's episode also previews that upcoming meeting, with the market expecting the organization to extend its production cut agreement with its non-OPEC partners, given recent declarations by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. But there are still details to be sorted, such as the length of the extension and the exemptions of Libya and Nigeria, and not all countries are necessarily on board. We discuss what to watch for and set the stage for the November 30 summit.
