Porta stepped down as CEO last week and has been arrested, the company told S&P Global Platts Monday. The company itself is not under investigation.
"At no time during the investigation was operation hindered or stopped, and we are in full operative service to our customers," a company representative said.
Italy's financial police arrested several people last week including former Malta footballer Darren Debono as part of the 'Operation Dirty Oil' investigation, the Guardia di Finanza said Friday.
The police say gasoil from Libya's Zawia refinery was smuggled to Malta and then sold on to Italy and elsewhere in Europe.
In a statement last week, Maxcom expressed "deep surprise" at the investigation and said it had nothing to do with the alleged offenses.
