Trinidad monthly LNG, gas production rises to highest levels in two years

Natural gas production in Trinidad and Tobago in November rose to its highest level in two years, helping to boost LNG production at Trinidad-based gas liquefaction complex Atlantic LNG, the energy ministry reported Monday.

The increased production is a rare positive sign for the twin-island nation's gas supply picture, which has been negatively impacted by ongoing shortages for years.

LNG production at Atlantic LNG totaled 2.4 million cu m in November, up 29% on the year, the ministry said in its monthly energy bulletin. That is the highest production figure since January 2016.

November LNG sales and deliveries from Atlantic LNG were 49 million MMBtu, up 26% on the year, the ministry said.

Atlantic LNG's sales and deliveries of NGLs in November totaled 458,551 barrels, up 27% on the year.

Trinidad and Tobago's LNG sector used 1.9 Bcf/d of gas in November, up 28% on the year, according to the ministry report.

Production increases reflect a significant rise in natural gas production by BP Trinidad and Tobago, BHP Billiton and other producers.

The seven gas producers operating in Trinidad and Tobago produced an average 3.6 Bcf/d of gas in November, up 14%, and the highest volumes since January 2016, according to ministry figures.

The gas supply picture has improved partly because of new supply, including BPTT's Juniper gas development and other sources. In August, BPTT announced first gas at Juniper and said the $2 billion offshore project will eventually boost BPTT's gas production capacity by an estimated 590,000 Mcf/d.

Gas curtailments by producers have undermined supply since about 2010. T&T's gas production typically averaged between 3.8 Bcf/d and 4.1 Bcf/d before the onset of shortages.

Atlantic operates and manages four LNG trains in Point Fortin, with each train owned by a holding company comprised of different companies.

Shareholders are BP, Shell LNG, Summer Soca LNG Liquefaction and the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago.
