London — CME Group's metals trading volume averaged a record 568,000 contracts/day in 2017, up 23% from 460,000 contracts/day in 2016, the US exchange group said Wednesday.

In December, metals volumes averaged 531,000 contracts/day, up 48% from December 2016, while the Q4 average was up 26% year on year at 616,000 contracts/day.
In December, gold futures and options average daily volume was up 47% year on year to 303,000 contracts, while silver futures and options average daily volume was up 29% to 126,000 contracts.
Copper futures and options average daily volume was up 74% year on year at 119,000 contracts, CME said.
CME's suite of metals products includes precious metals (gold, silver, platinum and palladium), base metals (copper, aluminum, aluminum alloy, alumina, zinc and lead) and ferrous metals (iron ore, ferrous scrap and hot rolled coil).
