Houston — The Southwest Power Pool had a 160-MW wind farm in Nebraska enter commercial operation in November, and another 959 MW of wind is on schedule to start commercial operation by the end of 2019, a Generation Interconnection Active Requests report generated Wednesday shows.
The other facilities to come online this month are in Kansas, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Texas.

So far in 2019, 1,119 MW of nameplate capacity has entered commercial service in SPP – all wind except for a 5-MW combuston turbine in Hale County Texas.
Of the generation that has started up, the largest total is in Texas, which in addition to the combustion turbine had a 478-MW wind farm start up in September in Abernathy County, Texas.
The next largest total is in Kansas, which had 276 MW start in July in Thomas County, and 200 MW start up in Allen County in September.
The new 160-MW wind farm in Nebraska is the only other facility to enter commercial service in 2019.
Aside from the 959 MW of wind generation that had November or December commercial operations dates and are reported to be "on-schedule,” the GIAR report shows two other projects to be "on schedule” for startup in 2019, but had earlier projected commercial operation dates.
One of these is a 29-MW steam turbine scheduled to start up in Ponca City, Oklahoma, in mid-June, and the other is a 100-MW wind project scheduled to come online by the end of September in Le Flore County, Oklahoma.
The report shows four other projects with 2019 CODs that are on suspension. They include a 120-MW solar project in Kiowa County, Oklahoma, a 300-MW wind project in Sumner, Kansas, both with December 1 CODs, and two other wind projects in Oklahoma: 248-MW in Roosevelt County and 250 MW in Caddo, Oklahoma, both with December 31 CODs.
SPP started the year with about 20,600 MW of wind nameplate capacity, about 23% of the total. Wind consistently provides 50% or more of SPP's power at any time, but more frequently at night, when overall power demand is low and wind output is high. In general, coal-fired generation is SPP's leading power source.
For the year through Tuesday, wind has supplied an average of 27.7% of SPP's daily power, up from 24% in all of 2018, according to SPP reports.
In contrast, coal-fired generation has supplied an average of 34.8% of SPP's daily power so far in 2019, down from 42.4% in 2018.
Natural gas-fired generation comes in third in 2019, at 25.9%, up from 23.2% in 2018.
