German 2013 power demand down 1.8%, gas use up 7% on long winter

German electricity consumption in 2013 fell for a third year in a row, while demand for gas increased by around 7% mainly due to the longer-than-usual winter heating period, energy industry group BDEW said Monday.

Based on its latest estimates, electricity consumption for 2013 will be 596 TWh, around 11 TWh or 1.8% less than 2012, BDEW said. Reasons for the continued decline in power demand are the still slow recovery of production in Germany, especially in energy-intensive industries, and generally increased energy efficiency as well as the missing leap day compared with 2012, the BDEW said.

Gas demand for 2013 is estimated at 970 TWh, compared with 909 TWh for 2012, as more gas was used to generate heat during the longer-than-usual cold spell in the second quarter, it said.

Gas use by industry remained stable, while gas use for power generation declined, BDEW said.

BDEW is the German energy industry's federal lobby group, with around 1,800 member companies, representing about 90% of Germany's power and gas market.
