Japanese reactors generated 5.48 TWh in May, up 16.1% on year

The seven pressurized water reactors that operated in Japan in May generated 5.48 TWh, 16.1% more than the 4.71 TWh produced in May 2020, when six units were online, the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum said in a statement June 11.

The May total capacity factor for the country's 33 operable reactors was 22.3%, up from 20.8% in April.

The low total capacity factor for May was the result of the slow rate of return of units to service since the March 2011 accident at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima I.

None of 17 operable boiling water reactors is currently operating in Japan.

Kyushu Electric Power Co.'s May capacity factor was 103.9% and Kansai Electric Power Co.'s was 46.6%, JAIF said.

Capacity factors can exceed 100%, especially in winter months, because cold seawater raises the efficiency of the heat exchange between steam and seawater in condensers.

Kyushu Electric in May generated 893,843 MWh at its 1,180-MW Genkai-3 at a capacity factor of 101.8%, and produced 886,361 MWh at its 1,180-MW Genkai-4, with a capacity factor of 101%.

Kyushu Electric produced 710,511 MWh at its 890-MW Sendai-1 at a capacity factor of 107.3% and 709,316 MWh at the 890-MW Sendai-2, with a capacity factor of 107.1%.

Kansai Electric generated 686,516 MWh at its 870-MW Takahama-3 at a capacity factor of 106.1% and 688,182 MWh at its 870-MW Takahama-4 at a capacity factor of 106.3%.

Kansai Electric produced 907,849 MWh at its 1,180-MW Ohi-4, with a capacity factor of 103.4%.

The company plans to restart its 1,180-MW Ohi-3 July 3, reconnect the reactor with the grid July 5 and resume operations at 100% of capacity July 30, a Kansai Electric spokesman said May 26.
