Refueling at New Hampshire's Seabrook-1 reactor ends: NextEra

Washington — The output of NextEra Energy Resources' 1,296-MW Seabrook-1 nuclear reactor in Seabrook, New Hampshire, was ascending towards capacity after it connected to the grid early Monday following a refueling and maintenance outage that began April 1, company spokesman Alan Griffith said.

Griffith said the unit connected to the grid at about 7 am EDT (1100 GMT). "We are in the process of bringing the plant back up" to 100% of capacity, Griffith said. Citing competitive business reasons, Griffith declined to say when the unit is expected to return to 100% of capacity.

The unit was operating at 6% of capacity early Monday morning, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission said in a daily reactor status report. Griffith said late Monday morning that the unit was operating at a higher capacity, but he did not know the level. "I don't know exactly where we are," he said.



At 6:44 pm EDT Saturday, while exiting the refueling outage, the unit was manually tripped, said an event report filed with the NRC. Griffith said the unit had not yet connected to the grid and the trip was done for an instrument recalibration. Griffith said he did not know what instrument was recalibrated.

"It was a temporary stop in the startup," Griffith said.

The average duration of refueling outages at US nuclear units in 2016 was 35.6 days, according to S&P Global Platts data.
