UK thermal coal imports in October fell 22% year on year to 2.64 million mt, customs data showed, meaning the UK imported 27.6 million mt in the first 10 months of 2014, down 16%.

Falling clean dark spreads, the theoretical profit margins of coal-fired power generation, have depressed the UK's rate of thermal coal burn this year.

Russia delivered 1.19 million mt of thermal coal to the UK in October, 18% less than a year earlier but 19% higher than in September.

Colombian volumes into the UK reached a year-to-date high of 1.08 million mt in October, while shipments from the US fell 35% year on year to 333,977 mt, which was down 61% on September.
