The year-to-date volume at the end of May stood at 76.5 million mt, up 2.8% on year from the same period in 2017.

The share of thermal coal in the total coal export volume for May was not provided.

Milder weather would have allowed increased exports from terminals at northern ports, while higher demand in Pacific markets in May would have put upward pressure on thermal coal exports.

Higher thermal coal prices in May could have encouraged producers to increase exports. The average S&P Global Platts assessment for the FOB Russia Baltic 6,000 kcal/kg NAR 90-day price for May was $84.75/mt, up $6.37 on the month, with the average assessment for the FOB Russia Pacific 6,300 kcal/kg GAR 90-day price at $106.25/mt, up $10.25 on the month.
