Houston — Entergy Texas bought 123,659 st of coal in April, down 22.5% from 159,508 st bought a month earlier and 12.3% lower than the 140,977 st in the year-ago month, the utility said Tuesday in a state regulatory filing.

Entergy Texas told the Public Utility Commission of Texas it bought 47,820 st of coal for its 241-MW Big Cajun No 2 plant and 73,639 st for its 385-MW Nelson Unit 6 plant, compared with 54,379 st and 103,329 st purchased in March, respectively, and 67,113 st and 73,401 st in the year-ago month, according to filings. The remaining 2,200 st was listed as physical inventory adjustments, compared with 1,800 st adjusted a month earlier and 463 st in April 2018.

Entergy paid roughly $4.54 million for the coal, or $36.73/st, compared with $5.64 million, or $35.55/st a month earlier, and $4.99 million, or $35.43/st, in the year-ago month, according to the filing.

On a per MMBtu basis, coal deliveries were at $2.206/MMBtu in April, up from $2.115/MMBtu in the prior month and $2.089/MMBtu in the year-ago month. Natural gas deliveries were at $2.899/MMBtu in April, down from $3.05/MMBtu in March, but up from $1.698/MMBtu in the year-ago month.

Gas delivered to its 1,606-MW Sabine plant in Orange, Texas, was at $2.879/MMBtu in April, while gas to the 503-MW Lewis Creek plant in Willis, Texas, was at $2.913/MMBtu, compared with $3.11/MMBtu and $2.934/MMBtu, respectively, in March and 99.5 cents/MMBtu and $2.869/MMBtu in the year-ago month.

Average heat content for the Powder River Basin coal delivered to the Big Cajun No. 2 plant was 8,329 Btu/lb, while coal to the Nelson No 6 plant averaged 8,475 Btu/lb.

Roughly $2.02 million, or $42.15/st, worth of coal was delivered to the Big Cajun No. 2 plant, while $2.43 million, or $32.99/st, worth of coal was bought for the Nelson plant.

The Big Cajun No. 2 plant opened in 1983 and in New Roads, Louisiana, while the Nelson No. 6 plant started in 1982 and is in Westlake, Louisiana.
