Trump to create White House office for innovation

U.S. President Donald Trump plans to announce March 27 the formation of the White House Office of American Innovation, which will be led by his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, The Washington Post reported March 26.

The innovation office is intended to aid in modernization plans and improvement programs, such as the upgrade of systems and data infrastructure of federal departments and agencies, as well as the creation of projects under the president's $1 trillion infrastructure plan. The office is also expected to address means to combat opioid abuse, the report said.

With the intention of gathering ideas from business-minded individuals, Kushner has reportedly begun working with U.S. tech leaders such as Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook, Microsoft Corp. founder Bill Gates, Salesforce.com Inc. CEO Marc Benioff and Tesla Motors Inc. CEO Elon Musk.

Kushner will report directly to Trump. The president's elder daughter and Kushner's wife, Ivanka Trump, will also collaborate with the tech-focused office on specific issues, although she will not have an official role.
