1st grid-scale pumped heat energy storage system goes online in UK

A grid-scale pumped heat energy storage system has entered operation at the Sir Joseph Swan Centre for Energy Research at Newcastle University in U.K., according to a Jan. 8 news release.

The 150-kW electricity storage project, touted as pumped heat energy storage system, can store up to 600 kWh of power. The project was originally developed as part of Energy Technologies Institute LLP's distribution scale energy storage project for solar or wind energy sources.
