Bulgaria's Belene nuclear plant draws investment interest

Thirteen companies have submitted applications to participate in development of the Belene nuclear power plant, Bulgarian Energy Minister Temenuzhka Petkova said Aug. 20.

In particular, seven companies including China National Nuclear Corp., Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. Ltd. and State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM's Atomenergoprom JSC are interested in becoming strategic investors in the power plant.

Electricité de France SA subsidiary Framatome and General Electric Co. are interested in financing and supplying equipment for the plant, according to a news release. North Macedonia's application is for the purchase of electricity from Belene.

A working group of representatives from the Bulgarian Ministry of Energy, Bulgarian Energy Holding EAD, Natsionalna Elektricheska Kompania EAD and Electricity System Operator EAD will prepare a shortlist within 90 days.

"The procedure is flexible and allows the selected strategic investor to negotiate with companies that have expressed interest in minority shareholding in the project or in purchasing electricity," the Bulgarian Ministry of Energy said.

The indicative deadline for selecting strategic investors to implement the Belene project is one year.
