Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has jumped into the meal-kit business, listing collections of prepackaged ingredients on its website.
As of Dec. 12, the company listed kits from third-party manufacturers Takeout Kit and Home Chef on its website. The kits allow customers to prepare dishes ranging from "Spanish Paella with Chorizo and Artichokes" to "Vietnamese Pho Noodle Soup" for groups of up to four people, according to listings on Wal-Mart's website.
Wal-Mart did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Wal-Mart has been angling for a position in the meal-kit industry since at least September, when the retailer was in talks with multiple privately held meal-kit makers to sell their products, TheStreet reported in September.
The offerings make Wal-Mart a competitor with Kroger Co. and Amazon.com Inc., both of which also introduced meal-kit selections this year, as well as Blue Apron Inc., which is adjusting its strategy after going public in June.
