Canada adds more jobs than expected in August

Canada added 81,000 jobs in August, most of them part time, while the unemployment rate remained unchanged from July at 5.7%, data from Statistics Canada showed.

The consensus estimate of economists polled by Econoday was for an increase of 15,000 jobs.

The number of employees in the private sector increased by 94,000, following a decline in July, while the number of public-sector employees and self-employed workers remained steady.

Employment in the finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing sectors grew, while employment at the building, business and other support services declined.

On a year-over-year basis, employment increased by 2.5% due to gains in both full-time and part-time work, while total hours worked rose 1.2%.
