Blackberry sues Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram

BlackBerry Ltd. is suing Facebook Inc., along with its WhatsApp Inc. and Instagram Inc. apps, for patent infringement, Reuters reported, citing a filing with a Los Angeles court.

The Canadian company is claiming that the U.S. social networking giant, as well as WhatsApp and Instagram, copied Blackberry Messenger's technology and features.

"Defendants created mobile messaging applications that co-opt BlackBerry's innovations, using a number of the innovative security, user interface, and functionality enhancing features," Blackberry said in the filing.

Blackberry's lawsuit reportedly came after years of negotiation and was brought about by the company's obligation to its shareholders to pursue legal remedies. Facebook intends to challenge the lawsuit.

Blackberry is also in an ongoing patent row with Nokia Corp., where the former sued the Finnish company in February 2017 for patent infringements concerning 3G and 4G wireless technology. The case is still pending in a U.S. federal court in Delaware, according to the report.
