NIESR: UK economic growth improves to 0.2% in March-May

Britain's economic growth accelerated to 0.2% in the three months to May from 0.1% in the three months to April, according to an estimate by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research.

This estimated pace of expansion was only around half the potential growth rate of the economy, said Amit Kara, the institute's head of U.K. macroeconomic forecasting.

"Economic growth has slowed materially since the start of this year and it continues to remain weak," Kara said, attributing the slowdown to weather-related disruptions in March.

The latest data also pointed to a decline in factory output and a recovery in the retail and services sectors.

The economy is projected to strengthen, although risks related to Brexit, global trade and geopolitical tensions could weigh on growth, Kara added.

The institute forecasts GDP growth of 1.4% and 1.7% in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
