Walmart supplier recalls sausage products over potential contamination

Meatpacking company R. L. Zeigler Co. Inc. is recalling about 11,664 pounds of ready-to-eat poultry and meat sausage products that may be contaminated with metal, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said Dec. 30.

The recalled products include the Walmart Inc. supplier's 24-ounce plastic packages containing about nine links of Zeigler A Tradition of Great Taste Red Hots, as well as the product's extra-hot variant, with a Jan. 24, 2019, use-by date.

The affected items, produced Nov. 29 and shipped to retail locations in the U.S., bear the establishment number EST. P-9156S inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The Selma, Ala.-based meat producer, which discovered the issue after receiving consumer complaints on Dec. 13 and Dec. 27, said it notified the Food Safety and Inspection Service, or FSIS, regarding the incident Dec. 29. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of the recalled products, the agency added.

FSIS is urging customers who purchased the items to discard them or to return them to their place of purchase.
