Tech Time: South Korea plans 9 trillion won tech boost; Tianjin invests in AI

* South Korea seeks to invest 9 trillion South Korean won over the next five years in 13 key industries to help boost the country's growth, Yonhap News Agency reported May 29. The plan entails boosting the growth of the local drone market as well as tripling the number of artificial intelligence firms.

* Tianjin municipality in China plans to invest 100 billion yuan in AI technology, Xinhua News Agency reported. The fund will focus on emerging industries such as intelligent robots, hardware and software.

* The Nordic states in Europe have agreed to develop and co-launch 5G across the region, the Nordic Council said May 23. The project is being run by the Nordic Council of Ministers for Digitalisation and the five Nordic governments, among others.

CLOUD

* HKBN Group Ltd. has acquired Hong Kong-headquartered I Consulting Group, a managed service provider for cloud solutions, for a total consideration of up to HK$200 million.

* AT&T Inc. is working with Alphabet Inc. unit Google Inc. to connect customers to the cloud, according to a May 29 news release.

5G AND THE INTERNET OF THINGS

* Foxconn Industrial Internet Co. Ltd., the Taiwanese smart factory unit of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd., or Foxconn, is looking to raise up to 27.1 billion yuan in a Chinese IPO, Bloomberg Quint reported May 22.

* Google acquired Cask Data Inc., a company that specializes in building and running big data solutions for enterprise customers.

* Vodafone Group PLC unit Vodafone Ireland teamed up with Asavie Technologies Ltd., a provider of secure enterprise mobility and IoT connectivity, to introduce Vodafone IoT Express.

* Sprint Corp. unveiled the Sprint IoT Factory, an online marketplace for various IoT services for business.

VIRTUAL REALITY AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

* Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s Damo Academy has launched Alibaba Machine Intelligence Technologies' new smart ordering system that is able to take orders through voice recognition.

* International Business Machines Corp. unveiled plans to add 1,800 jobs in France over the next two years. IBM will hire experts focusing on areas such as AI, cloud computing and IoT.

* Samsung Research, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.'s research and development hub, has opened AI hubs in the United Kingdom, Canada and Russia on May 22, 24 and 29, respectively.

* Alibaba-backed SenseTime Group Ltd. has teamed up with Hong Kong Science and Technology Park Corp. to set up an AI hub in Hong Kong.

* Microsoft Corp. said May 20 that it purchased conversational AI startup Semantic Machines Inc.

* Shutterstock Inc. said May 17 that it teamed up with IBM to use AI to make media campaigns more engaging.

* Oracle Corp. has agreed to acquire California-based data science platform provider DataScience Inc.

* 8x8 Inc. purchased California-based startup MarianaIQ Inc., as part of strategic investments in AI and machine learning.

DRONES AND OTHER DEVICES

* Sony Corp. said May 28 that it will release an OLED microdisplay featuring 1600 x 1200 resolution, which the company claims has achieved the world's smallest pixel pitch of 6.3µm.

As of May 29, US$1 was equivalent to 1,082.33 South Korean won and 6.42 yuan.
