PepsiCo targeting 50% recycled plastic use in EU by 2030

PepsiCo Inc. said Sept. 5 that it plans to use 50% recycled plastic in its bottles across the European Union by 2030, with an interim target of 45% recycled plastic packaging by 2025.

The move is in line with the European Commission's voluntary recycled plastic pledging campaign, which aims to ensure that 10 million tons of recycled plastics will be used to make new products in the EU market by 2025.

It involves PepsiCo's beverage operations and will cover all drinks sold in PET bottles, including Pepsi, 7 Up, Pepsi Max, Tropicana and Naked. The soft drinks maker used about 13% recycled plastic in its EU beverage operations last year, according to the announcement.

PepsiCo said the project builds on its broader goal of achieving 100% recyclable, compostable or biodegradable packaging by 2025.
