Sainsbury's to raise minimum wage to £9.20 per hour

J Sainsbury PLC on March 6 said it plans to raise the minimum wage of store workers to £9.20 per hour from £8.00 and introduce a new employee contract, which includes proposals such as no paid breaks and bonuses.

For staff working in some parts of London, the proposed rate of pay will be £9.80 per hour, the British supermarket chain said.

Sainsbury's will spend over £100 million in 2018 for the initiative, which it expects to fund through ongoing cost savings. The move comes after its plan to restructure its store management.

The company is looking to introduce a new contract that will affect 130,000 store employees. It also proposed to consolidate 22 existing store positions down to five.

Sainsbury's plans to discontinue bonuses and paid breaks for its workers as well as change its working standards to ensure that employees are "always in the right place at the right time" for customers.

A small number of workers might be adversely affected by the changes, which the company expects to compensate via top-up payments for 18 months.

Subject to the outcome of its consultation process, which begins March 6, Sainsbury's plans to implement the policies beginning in September.
