Walmart Inc. said March 5 that it will start offering meal kits at over 2,000 stores in 2018, expanding the meal-kit business the company started in 2017 when it launched meal kits made by third-party manufacturers.
The meal kits, developed and tested in Walmart's Culinary and Innovation Center, are now available at 250 of the company's stores, the statement added. The kits are made and assembled at the stores daily. Options include preportioned cooking kits, kits to accompany in-store rotisserie chicken as well as meals that can be simply heated up and served.
The move will help Walmart gain a stronger foothold against food retail rivals, including Amazon.com Inc., Germany-based discount grocer ALDI Einkauf GmbH & Co. oHG and meal-kit provider Blue Apron Inc..
